Tankwa Family Day 2025 was more than an event. The CWDM team together with many other partners, celebrated connection and community. The annual Tankwa Family Day took place on Saturday, 4 October 2025.
Executive Mayor Ald. (Dr) Elna von Schlicht said: “Family Day in the Tankwa Karoo shows that all communities, irrespective of their location, matter. Every resident deserves dignified services, and by bringing government closer to where they are, we ensure that no one is left behind, especially those in the most rural parts of our province.”
This annual and much anticipated event is always well attended, with visitors from far and wide, arriving by any means possible, including donkey cart, in order to access the services available.
It was an honour to partner with the various stakeholders, Western Cape Government (Departments of Social Development, Health and Wellness, Agriculture, Economic Development and Tourism), Witzenberg Municipality, South African Police Service (SAPS), Tankwa Padstal, local businesses and NGOs.
Interactive theatre brought important messages to life, especially around hygiene practices at spaza shops (a project that CWDM is actively involved with, hosting workshops for spaza shop owners, emphasizing the importance of good hygiene and safe storage practices), empowering communities with the necessary knowledge in a fun and engaging way. Other highlights of the day included, Rieldans performances, local entertainment featuring area choirs and singers, a market with local produce and handcrafted goods, as well as psychosocial support, health education, and service awareness initiatives.
As CWDM, we were proud to have our Rural and Social Development teams present at the Tankwa Karoo Family Day, alongside our Municipal Health Services, Disaster Management and Fire Services, bringing government closer to the people of Tankwa Karoo. This was our aim, to show how the CWDM can assist the residents of Tankwa and served as a reminder to never underestimate the power of collaboration and partnership. Anything is possible when collaboration, partnership and vision align!
It’s safe to say, the Tankwa Family Day 2025 was a tremendous success!
